Wes

“I’ve got us for the second round,” Shai says over the music at a bar we frequent in Beverly Hills.

I’m so game tonight. The downside is that since we got here, Shai and Piper can’t help but grill me about Allie. As usual, Hezron plays devil’s advocate.

“As I was saying. You’re going to be dealing with a lot of traumas, bro. That woman must have seen some shit, been through even worse shit and a plethora of God knows what.”

He’s so over the top, I just want to throat-punch him.

“The hell?” Hezron interrupts, appalled. “We all have trauma. Some worse than others, but still. You’re probably still stuck on that psychotic killer theory you came up with.”

“Calm down, guzzle nuts. Your aggression is messing with my vibration. I’m all about safety here. Wes doesn’t even know her, and yet she comes and goes as she pleases. Who knows what she does during the hours she’s away from the house?”

Hezron flips him off. “Oh, fuck off, cunt. Anyway…” He turns to me. “How have things been going so far?”

“No problems, yet. She’s out and about mostly doing her own thing. Got a new job. Helped me out of a situation with Ben at his school. She’s at work right now, actually.”

Not to mention I almost kissed her on the beach.

Piper’s eyebrow rises an inch. “She’s working? Or is she back to working?” She makes quotation marks with her fingers.

“She’s working where she said she’s working,” I bite.

Shai raises a brow. “How do you know?”

“Because I’ve seen her there, okay? Next.”

I’m not about to spill about how we’ve been getting to know each other lately…

And how much I wanted her on her back that night when—

“Okay. Then how do you know she’s not keeping things in her room to screw you over? Collecting mementos like Silence of the Lambs? She’s a thief, and she’s probably going to milk you for everything you’ve got.”

I take a shot of Jameson. “Hasn’t tried milking me at all. She’s pretty independent.”

And I enjoy her company.

She makes me forget about the shit-hole my life has been.

“Right. So independent, you let her take Ben out for a whole day, not knowing about any other lurking tendencies.”

“Relax. They went on the Surfliner, and he came back all smiles and couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had. She kept me in the loop, sent photos and videos. Texted me at every turn.”

Shai and Piper sit there looking unconvinced while Hezron takes another shot.

“I picked them up and got to know her a bit. Sounds like your average girl, just trying to make things work. I, for one, think she’s pretty cool. Shit. Which reminds me. I forgot to tell her about Ben’s play.”

Piper throws up a dismissive wave. “I feel you’re still being reckless about this. How do you know if she’s not still in touch with her pimp? I did some google research and there’s the likelihood some of these girls return to them. And going back to ‘the life’ as they call it.
